This an email I received from a newsletter by Jon Gordon, author of The Seed and many other great books. It’s amazing where a positive attitude will get you.

THE POWER OF A POSITIVE ATTITUDE

I received an email from a woman named Amber last week that I knew I had to share. I had to share it because she represents the great things that happen when a person decides to plant themselves where they are and make a difference with a positive attitude. While Amber says some kind things about me, it’s not about me… it’s about Amber and the choices she made. So with Amber’s permission here is her email to me:

Jon:

My name is Amber and I wanted to share a little bit of my story with you because what you’ve shared about life and positive energy has flipped my life right side up.

This past year has been one of the toughest for me… feeling stuck in an entry level administrative position for a company that has no relevance to what I want to do with my life. In January, after two years of being together, my boyfriend tells me he doesn’t love me and probably never did which left me devastated and broken hearted.

I’ve been signed up for your weekly newsletter and read them every Monday morning as I drink my coffee at work but it wasn’t until this March when I figuratively slapped myself in the face and said, “No more negativity!”

Since then I’ve started new habits at work to keep my energy positive and it’s drastically changed the entire vibe of my workplace. Currently I’m the receptionist/ administrative support and back in February I applied for the executive assistant position when the previous one left. Unfortunately, I was not offered the position but I was able to keep my current job.

So we hired an outside executive assistant and even though I didn’t get the job I wanted I still kept my attitude positive and helped out as much as I could with the executives and other departments.

When people walk in the front door I’m the first face they see so I smile big and sometimes start laughing when I say, “Good Morning!” Especially on Monday’s.

Instead of waiting for someone to ask me for help I offer it with an open mind and upbeat can-do attitude.

Apparently the CEO, CCO (Chief Clinical Officer) and CFO noticed my change and yesterday they offered me the executive assistant position because the one they hired is unable to keep up with their requests. (I won’t get into how much extra work I’ve had to do to pick up the slack for who they hired because I’m sure she’s trying her hardest).

Anyways, one of the biggest things I’ve taken to heart from your weekly newsletters and books is changing my perspective on how I view my job and its significance. Yes, it is an entry level administrative position but when I’m passionate about assisting people and doing the best job I can do it drastically makes my life feel fulfilling.

I am one of those people who is jaded by the repetitive rush of society making me feel like the only way I can make a difference is to start a non-profit company for a third world country. My life feels so much more put together and in order now that I have this awesome opportunity to give and learn with this company.

All in all I had to thank you somehow for having the passion to help others because it truly is inspiring to me. So thank you so much Jon… my life has changed because your words pointed me in the right direction. Take care!

-Amber

I know there are millions of people like Amber out there and if you are struggling like she was or have a friend or colleague who is struggling, please know that you can truly turn things around with the power of a positive attitude. It’s not just a theory. Amber is proof that it happens every day in real life.

If you have a power of positive attitude story please share it with us on our blog or Facebook page.

-Jon

I think most people have a misconception about what networking really is. Some feel going to several networking events handing out as many cards as you can and recooperating for the next event is what it’s about. Then there are those that join several networking groups, whether they be hard contact groups, social groups, professional groups, etc and getting people to know, like and hopefully trust you to gain their business. But those that feel that’s correct are missing the boat.

Networking is all about building relationships. If you belong to several networking groups or are attending several events how are you possibly going to find the time to, not only still run your business, but build relationships with all of those people? It’s best to stick with 1 or maybe 2 networking groups and really netWORK. This process takes time and work. Your network of people are really your salesforce. You will need to work and train them so that they know what to look for in order to pass you good quality referrals. If you have several areas of your business focus on one part until they can understand fully what that product/service is about and can send you referrals for that specific area of your business. And no matter what, don’t just sit back and wait for referrals to come to you. Go out and pass some to others. I promise the more you help others the more they will be willing to help you.

Great article from Jon Gordon’s newsletter!

In the spirit of Thanksgiving I’d love to share with you the benefits and power of two simple words. THANK YOU.

They are two words that have the power to transform our health, happiness, athletic performance and success. Research shows that grateful people are happier and more likely to maintain good friendships. A state of gratitude, according to research by the Institute of HeartMath, also improves the heart’s rhythmic functioning, which helps us to reduce stress, think more clearly under pressure and heal physically. It’s actually physiologically impossible to be stressed and thankful at the same time. When you are grateful you flood your body and brain with emotions and endorphins that uplift and energize you rather than the stress hormones that drain you.

Gratitude and appreciation are also essential for a healthy work environment. In fact, the number one reason why people leave their jobs is because they don’t feel appreciated. A simple thank you and a show of appreciation can make all the difference.

Gratitude is like muscle. The more we do with it the stronger it gets. In this spirit here are 4 ways to practice Thanksgiving every day of the year.

1. Take a Daily Thank You Walk – I wrote about this in The Energy Bus. Take a simple 10-minute walk each day and say out loud what you are thankful for. This will set you up for a positive day.

2. Meal Time Thank You’s – On Thanksgiving, or just at dinner with your friends and family, go around the table and have each person, including the kids at the little table, say what they are thankful for.

3. Gratitude Visit – Martin Seligman, Ph.D., the father of positive psychology, suggests that we write a letter expressing our gratitude to someone. Then we visit this person and read them the letter. His research shows that people who do this are measurably happier and less depressed a month later.

4. Say Thank You at Work – Doug Conant, the CEO of Campbell Soup, has written over 16,000 thank you notes to his employees and energized the company in the process. Energize and engage your co-workers and team by letting them know you are grateful for them and their work. And don’t forget to say thank you to your clients and customers too.

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. I’m thankful for YOU.

- Jon

I receive a newsletter from Micheal Beck at xleaders.com and I received an email today that I found really useful. I have a few different computers that I use (laptop, desk top). On those computers I have several favorites stored and it’s so annoying when you are looking for one of your favorites only to figure out it’s on the “other” computer. Plus I use 2 different browsers sometimes (like Fire Fox or Explorer) and so there’s another spot I have favorites saved to.

There’s a website called xmarks.com. It will sync and and all of these favorites to one spot and it’s FREE! Give it a shot unless you rather go on a hunt next time you need your favorite link

“How do you know if a man needs encouragement? If he is breathing.” -Truett Cathy, Founder, Chick-Fil-A

With so many people in the world telling us we can’t succeed, we need to hear people telling us we can. I remember my high school English teacher telling me not to apply to Cornell University because they wouldn’t accept me and even if they did I wouldn’t be able to do the work. (It’s funny that I’m a writer now). I almost didn’t apply but a few days later I saw Ivan Foldfarb, a former teacher, in the hallway and asked him about Cornell. He said, “If you get in, then you go. You can do it.” His words made all the difference. I applied, was accepted and majored in Lacrosse .

Too often we think it’s our role to inject a dose of “reality” into someone’s life. We think it’s our job to protect people from the pain of failure and defeat. We think we must point out how bad the economy is and how horrible the job market is and how the sky is falling. We think that dreams were meant for others.

I say there are enough pessimists and “realists” in the world. The world doesn’t need more negativity and impossible thinkers. The world needs more optimists, encouragers, and inspirers. The world needs more people to speak into the hearts of others and say “I believe in you.” “Follow your passion and live your purpose.” “If you have the desire then you also have the power to make it happen.” “Keep working hard.” “You’re improving and getting better. Keep it up.” “The economy is tough but you can still grow your business.” “The job market is not great but I believe you’ll find the right job for you.” “We’ve hit a lot of obstacles but we’ll get the project finished.” “Even if you fail it will lead to something even better.” “You’re learning and growing.”

When it comes to encouragement I know that everyone of us loves working for and with people who bring out the best in us. We love being around people who uplift us and make us feel great. And while we’ll always remember the negative people who told us we couldn’t accomplish something, we will always cherish and hold a special place in our heart for those who encouraged us.

Today I want to encourage you to be an encourager. So often the difference between success and failure is belief. And so often that belief is instilled in us by someone who encouraged us. Today decide to be that person who instills a positive belief in someone who needs to hear your encouraging words. Uplift someone who is feeling down. Fuel your team with your positive energy. Rally others to focus on what is possible rather than what seems impossible. Share encouragement. It matters and we all need it. Stay Positive! – Jon

The kids are heading back to school and the weather already feels like fall! But one of the big recurring news items that we just can’t get away from is the “Swine Flu Epidemic” – or Pandemic, depending on who you listen to. There is a great deal of uncertainty and fear associated with not only the virus, but also the vaccine that is being fast tracked to market! I am especially concerned about folks that are under extra stress these days, because it is well documented that stress has a negative impact on the body’s immune system and can make them even more susceptible to viruses and disease.

I am writing to you here to give some proactive steps you can take for yourself and your family to minimize your risk, not only to the swine flu, but to all the strains of flu, viruses and colds.

The best starting point for maintaining health through any viral outbreak is living a healthy lifestyle. Small steps such as getting rest, eating well, drinking water, managing stress and daily exercise provide the body with what it needs to build a healthy immune system.

I will share with you the additional steps that my family and I will be taking to protect ourselves as we enter the cold and flu season. We will be using homeopathic remedies and specific nutritional supplements to first strengthen our immune systems, and additionally, will have natural remedies on hand in the event flu symptoms strike. Here is the list of nutritional products that I will have in my medicine cabinet:

ReHydration: A homeopathic blend used to enhance the body’s ability to use water. If you do get sick – you don’t won’t to be dehydrated before it even strikes!
Spagyric Greens: Stress inhibits the body’s ability to absorb nutrition. This concentrated nutritional blend is designed to be easily absorbed.
Flora Synergy: A unique probiotic used to boost the body’s good immune bacteria.
XenoForce: Herbal immune boosting formula that includes zinc.
Flu-Tone: This homeopathic blend is used to assist with flu prevention or elimination. For prevention: one dropper full monthly alerts the immune system to viral/flu issues.

At first onset of flu symptoms consider adding these:
Drainage-Tone: Homeopathic drainage and immune support.
Core Cat’s Claw: A Spagyrically processed herbal blend. Studies on www.pubmed.com show Cat’s Claw’s effectiveness in enhancing the body’s ability to eliminate viruses.

Increase Flu-Tone: Take daily while symptomatic.
I also use an essential oil blend such as “Purification” or “Immune Support” in a diffuser to kill viruses and bacteria in the air. We have had excellent results using “Cold & Flu” synergy blend in a foot soak at the first sign of cold & flu symptoms. It is amazing how 20 minutes soaking your feet in warm water with a few drops of this essential oil blend can relieve aches and pains and sinus congestion.

One last note, here is a web link you can copy and paste in your web browser for more information on the possible risks and side effects of the new flu vaccine. You might even want to subscribe to Dr. Mercola’s newsletter; it is always full of good nutritional and health information.

Please feel free to call me if you are interested in adding any of these nutritional supplements to your arsenal against the cold and flu season.
